The Iowa Heart Foundation will be sponsoring its 3rd annual run/walk fundraising event on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Des Moines Water Works Park. This event is aimed at raising awareness about heart disease and its impact on individuals, families and communities with funds generated being designated for placement of Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) in Iowa communities with an identified need.
Cardiac patients, family members and the public are invited to participate in this fun event. Whether you are an avid runner and/or a beginning walker, the run/walk is dedicated to increase your activity to support a heart healthy lifestyle.

Free "Friends and Family" CPR Training

The Iowa Heart Foundation held its 3rd annual free "Friends and Family" Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) class on Saturday, April 9, 2010. 
The class included training on how to perform effective CPR, how to assist an individual who is choking, and an introduction on the use of an Automated External Defibrillator or AED. This year participants included patients, family members, and the public. Feedback from participants included the class was "excellent" and they "learned a lot about CPR."

The Iowa Heart Foundation will hold its annual Cardiovascular Today conference on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at the Hy-Vee Conference Center in West Des Moines, Iowa. The intended audience is Physicians, Podiatrists, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Dietitians, and Sonographers. The purpose of the conference is to increase knowledge of the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease. Registration details may be found on the brochure attached. Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Placement Program

Life threatening emergencies may happen anywhere and at anytime. Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death in the United States. Time is critically important during a SCA and chances of survival are greatest with early treatment including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and an AED. Iowa Heart Foundation commits to fund/place and provide training on AEDs within Iowa communities in businesses with an established financial need. 2009-2010 AED Placement Program
During the 2009-2010 year the following communities and businesses benefited from the AED Placement Program: Des Moines Water Works Park, Windsor Heights Lutheran Church, Saints John and Paul Catholic Church with additional future placements currently being finalized.
One example of our commitment was the AED placement and training on June 17, 2010 at the Saints John and Paul Catholic church in Altoona Iowa. It is comforting to know another local Iowa organization is equipped with a life-saving devise. Pictured below are the Saint John and Paul priest and members who completed AED training and received a donated AED for their parish.

Iowa Heart Foundation also partners with generous donors to place an AED on July 7, 2010 at Christ the King Church. Pictured below are donors Dr.Terrance Slattery and his wife Jennifer Slattery (center) with Christ the King members.

2008-2009 AED Placement Program
During the 2008-2009 year the following communities and businesses benefited from the AED Placement Program: Salvation Army; Albia School; North Side Senior Center; Camp Collins Boy Scouts; St. Thomas Moore; Prairie City Fire Department; Adel Public Library; Des Moines Water Works Park.

Nursing Conference

The Iowa Heart Foundation held its first annual Nursing Conference on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Iowa Heart Center West University office located at 5880 University Avenue in West Des Moines, Iowa. The conference was designed for Nurse Practitioners and Registered Nurses to increase knowledge about advances in cardiovascular and preventive medicine. Speakers included James Zavoral, MD; Anuj Bhargava, MD, MBA, CDE, FACP, FACE; Evelyne Villines; and Mary Beth Gross, Pharm D. Over 40 attended the symposium.

The Iowa Heart Foundation held its 2nd annual run/walk fundraising event on Saturday, August 29, 2009 at Des Moines Water Works Park. Cardiac patients, family members and the public participated in the 5K and 10K runs and the 1 mile walk. Funds raised from this event were designated to assist in cardiac care and related services.

Free "Friends and Family" CPR Training

The Iowa Heart Foundation held its 2nd annual free "Family and Friends" Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) class on April 11, 2009. The class participants were taught the warning signs/risk factors of heart disease, how to perform effective CPR and introduction to the use of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). Based upon the positive feedback from this year’s participants, the Iowa Heart Foundation has committed to another free class on Saturday, April 10, 2010. On April 8, 2009, Susan Gonzaga, Marketing Manager for Seneca Companies presented Cindy Conroy of the Iowa Heart Foundation with contributions raised through Seneca's Biggest Loser program. The funds have been allocated toward the Childhood Obesity Prevention (COP) program focused upon heart health in Iowa middle schools.

The second annual "Scarlet: Fashion and Hair Show from the Heart" was held on Saturday, March 14, 2009 at the Scottish Rite located at 519 Park Street in Des Moines. The exciting evening featured a 3 act show including Iconic Singers, the Wizard of Oz, and Makeover Models. A silent auction event featured many local businesses who generously donated products for the show. Over 350 attended this one-of-a-kind event to raise funds for the Childhood Obesity Prevention (COP) program which focuses on combating heart disease in middle school children in Iowa.

"Portion Distortion" - Community Education

The Wayne Community Schools in Corydon hosted Cindy Conroy, a registered, licensed dietitian, for the presentation "Portion Distortion" to 7th through 12th grade students on Thursday, February 26th. The presentations were part of the Childhood Obesity Prevention (COP) Program which has been jointly funded by the Iowa Heart Foundation and the Wayne Community Foundation. More than 100 students attended the presentations which included information on appropriate portion sizes for various foods; healthier fast food choices; and healthful snack and beverage options.

The purpose of the annual Cardiovascular Today program is to increase knowledge of the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease, with an emphasis on clinical research updates, cardiac clearance guidelines, stenting, surgery, sleep apnea, cardiac arrhythmias, cardiac and vascular testing, lipid management and peripheral vascular disease.

The 18th annual Cardiovascular Today program was held on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at the HyVee Conference Center in West Des Moines, Iowa. The Iowa Heart Foundation is dedicated to community service including community health education programs impacting health practices of Iowans. The education of our youth through the Childhood Obesity Prevention (COP) project is one initiative that focuses on increasing knowledge and awareness of childhood obesity and its role in cardiovascular disease prevention.
Project Coordinator Cindy Conroy has presented "Portion Distortion" to approximately 300 students at the Adel-Desoto-Minburn (March and November); Albia, Seymour, and Lineville-Clio (October); and Jefferson-Scranton (December) middle schools.
A resource kit of educational materials including posters; a heart, artery and body fat models, a portion size kit, and other nutrition and cardiovascular-related educational tools were provided to each middle school.
Conroy also presented “Portion Distortion” to 100 third grade students at Cornell Elementary in the Saydel School District.

Iowa Heart Foundation has a commitment to increasing awareness and prevention of cardiac disease and its risk factors. Cindy Conroy, a registered, licensed dietitian provided an education program “Portion Distortion” to the staff of the Serenity Aveda and Signature Male Salons in West Des Moines.

The discussion included a review of portion versus serving size followed by a discussion of snack choices, fast food options, and beverage choices to reduce “extra” calories. Participant feedback confirmed the need for education on appropriate serving sizes and alternative food choices to reduce unwanted calories.
