screening programs impacting health practices of Iowans, and healthcare scholarships
for qualified students enrolled in Iowa colleges and universities.

Scholarship Programs
2010 Scholarship Awards Program
The Iowa Heart Foundation Board of Directors approved three nursing scholarships for the 2010-2011 year to qualified nursing students attending local colleges and universities.
Dr. David and Leticia Gordon Nursing Scholarship applications are now being accepted. Deadline for application submission is June 1, 2010.
Three nursing student scholarships will be offered:
- A $500 scholarship for a nursing student who is attending the nursing program at Mercy College of Health Sciences
- A $500 scholarship for a nursing student who is attending the nursing program at Grand View University
- A $200 scholarship for a student who is attending nursing at Des Moines Area Community College.

The Iowa Heart Foundation will host a Nursing Scholarship Awards Tea for recipients, donors, and Board members on Monday, August 23, 2010 from 4:00-5:00pm at the Iowa Heart Foundation office located at 5880 University Avenue, West Des Moines, Iowa.
2009 Scholarship Recipients Named - July 1, 2009
The Iowa Heart Foundation Board of Directors announced five 2009 Nursing Scholarship Recipients. Students attending the following schools have been awarded tuition scholarships for the Fall 2009 school year:
- Erma M. Hawkins Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 to Kiara Whitney who is attending the nursing program at Mercy College of Health Sciences
- C. J. Hawkins Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 to Nicholas Berte who is attending the nursing program at Mercy College of Health Sciences.
- Dr. David and Leticia Gordon Scholarship of $1,000 to Elizabeth Mulholland who is attending the nursing program at Mercy College of Health Sciences
- Dr. David and Leticia Gordon Scholarship of $1,000 to Megan Croghan who is attending the nursing program at Grand View University
- Dr. David and Leticia Gordon Scholarship of $500 to Monica Thilges who is attending nursing at Des Moines Area Community College.
Heart Healthy Living - The Childhood Obesity Project (COP)
December 2009 Update:
The Childhood Obesity Prevention (COP) Project continues to be presented in Iowa schools including the communities of Chariton, Lineville-Clio, Seymour, Urbandale and Waukee during the Fall semester. The South Central Iowa Community Foundation-Lucas County and the Pamida Foundation have provided funding to assist in local programming.
The COP Project focuses on cardiac risk factors, nutrition education, and the role of increasing activity in rural Iowa school children to combat the development of heart disease. Nutrition presentations on "Portion Distortion" were presented to students in 4th through 12th grades.

The COP Program focuses on cardiac risk factors, nutrition education, and the role of increasing activity in rural Iowa school children to combat the development of heart disease. Nutrition presentations on "Portion Distortion" and "Superfoods" were presented to students in 7th through 12th grades.

The Childhood Obesity Prevention (COP) project focuses on cardiac risk factors, nutritional education, and the role of increasing activity in rural
Iowa middle school children to combat the development of heart disease.
Included in the project is the placement of a "cardiac resource kit" to each school district containing heart and artery models;
cardiac, body systems and nutritional posters; and nutritional related education materials.
Two education sessions provided by Iowa Heart Center's professional staff may be chosen on topics of interest by each schools' health
and/or physical education teacher.
